A Rascal’s Guide to Mischief: Hunting For Shadows

I woke from my afternoon nap to find something moving across the living room floor. Not a toy. Not a bug. Something darker. Stranger.

A shape.

It slithered across the rug, long and thin, stretching and curling as if it had a mind of its own.

I froze, ears forward, whiskers alert. The shape stopped.

I took one careful step forward.

The shape twitched.

I pounced.

Nothing.

The shape slipped away under my paw, scattering across the floor like it was laughing at me. I whipped my head around—there it was again, dancing near the coffee table.

Clearly, this was a threat.

I began my hunt.

For the next ten minutes, I stalked the living room, eyes darting from floor to wall, chasing every flicker of movement. The shadows multiplied—some big, some small, all equally suspicious. I leapt at one near the curtain, only to have another slink by my tail.

The human, of course, found this hilarious. “What are you doing, Oscar?” they asked, laughing.

What was I doing? Defending our territory, obviously. Shadows like these can’t be trusted.

Then, the largest of them all appeared. It stretched across the room—long fingers reaching toward me. I crouched low, wiggled my hindquarters, and launched the attack of the century.

The shadow vanished, but not before I sent a pillow flying to the floor. Victory came at a price, but I’d do it again.

After a few more skirmishes, the shadows finally retreated. The living room was calm again. The human thought I was tired when I collapsed on the rug, but no—I was simply keeping watch.

I know they’ll return.

They always do.
